Anglo Saxons for Saga

Okay,

To get ready for our little Ragnarok Game day here in Phoenix on May 23rd, I decided to bust out and build a new army for Saga. I have been picking up a few Gripping Beast Plastic Saxon Thegans and Dark Age warriors box sets over the last month and decided that I needed to get started on this project. So about two weeks ago I started assembling the warriors.

First off I have to say the Gripping Beast plastic kits are awesome, and with two boxes of Thegns and one dark age warrior box I was able to assemble this whole army with only one metal model. I first started working on a two Hearthguard units of Ealdormen. I gave them all swords and did some extra highlights and brighter colors since these guys are the Warlords personal bodyguards.

I also tried a more stark high lighting with a two tone look on the shields. I wanted them to pop a little more than the rest of the army and I think they do. At first I did not like the high def colors, but it works on these models.

Next up are the warriors or Ceorls, now these pictures are the work in progress shot. The shields and extra highlights have not been done, but wanted to show the more subtle color compared to the hearthguard.

Since Saxons have a special rule about levies getting better armor, I decided to do two units of Geburs armed with spear and shields. These guys are still waiting to get painted, but as of the time I am writing this they all have been primed black.

 Last but not least is the Warlord, which is the Alfred the Great Model (and only metal figure in the whole army). As of the time of the picture, I was going to mount the standard bearer with him, but it doesn't look quite right. So I may just mount him by himself.

So there you have it, a quick little Saga update, will post more as the army progress'. I am really looking forward to the event next month.

Saga in the House

So,

I am still alive, been busy with paint commissions work since I have been back from Adepticon. One thing that has inspired me is to doa little "Non" event for Saga. So here are the details of our little event.

GitD presents Ragnarok a one day, three round Saga tournament. Bring out your 6 point Saga army and test your skill with other local Saga players. This is the first Saga tournament for Phoenix AZ and it is our chance to grow the community. So if you feel you have what it takes, bring your Warlord and his retinue and claim Odins favor! So if your in the Phoenix area and you play Saga come on out. Also if you don't play but are interested come on down  and see what the game is all about!

Now going along with the Saga theme, I finally got around to posting pictures of the Saga game I played with Drunken Samurai before I left for Adepticon. Drunken brought out his Normans and I busted out my Vikings. The funny thing is that both of these "Saga" forces are from our old WAB armies. Drunken thinks that it's been about ten years since his Normans were on the table! These two forces clashed many times against each other in WAB.

We played two games that day and if memory is correct we split the games with one win and one loss each. It was an awesome day of pushing models around and it was good to see both these forces back on the table. Saga is a great little game and I am already building a Anglo Saxon army out of all plastic Gripping Beast plastics. So your going to see more Saga action on the old blog. In fact this Saturday I'm getting together with Mike from DaGreenskins blog to build some awesome 4Ground dark age buildings. It seems that we are all back to dark age gaming. So,

I'm back from Adepticon and I think I am all caught up on my sleep, it was a great week of games and friends. So what did I do?, Well thanks for asking. My Adepticon trip started on Wednesday the 18th at 5:00am, that's when I had to head to the airport. Let me say that traveling with your figures is always interesting and you do get a lot of interesting questions about them.

Needless to say I got into Chicago around 3:00pm and once I got my luggage stowed, I headed down to help out where needed. I ran into my buddy Jamie and joined him stuffing bags for the event. We caught up with what was going on in our lives and what we had been doing hobby wise. After about two hours of stuffing we traded out with a few other luck volunteers and headed over to set up the Historical rooms. Once we got the Historical rooms set up it was time for me and my buddy Merle to find some dinner, which we ate at Sam & Harry's for a expensive Ribeye steak, it was awesome but pricey.

Thursday morning saw me up early at 6:30 to start setting up the Legends of the Old West game that Merle and I were running all day. We ran the Little Big Horn game in the morning and then set up for the two games of Battle at Tandywine Gultch, which was another two games of LotOW. Everyone that played had a blast and I even got to meet up with a good friend "Evil Kevin" who used to game with us in Phoenix. Needless to say I was busy from early in the AM until later in the night. Day one completed.

Day Two of Adepticon saw me playing in the Bolt Action team event. Now as some of you may know, two days before I left for Adepticon I decided to paint up a new 800 point force for just this event. I painted 41 models in less than two days and had them ready for the event, in fact as soon as I opened up my figure case, the familiar smell of Testor Dullcoate greeted me. (Maybe this is why TSA wanted to know what was in box? Hmm) Well the night before the guy that I was to team up with canceled and I was left with no one to team up with. Good thing we had odd number of teams because that meant the the tournament organizer, Jeremy  and I would team up together. I played three great games two against friends that I know in the Chicago area.

All in all it was a great time, John and Aaron, our first game was a blast and this was the second time I got to play John from Plastic Legions.Since Jeremy and I were playing as the ringers, there was no pressure to win. It was actually nice to just be able to enjoy the game and not worry about running the event.

After the team event I wondered around and took in the vendor hall and watched a few other games and demos. I also met up with more friends and went to dinner with Jay, Suzi and Justin at a local micro brewery called the Ram (I think). Day two completed.

Day three started much like the other days, early. Merle and I headed out to find breakfast and ended up at a Doughnut shop that doesn't seem to make doughnuts. Saturday was basically a free day until 1:00 when I ran a Pulp Alley demo game. So I headed over to the huge pirate game and wandered around the vendor hall again.

So today was the day for the Pulp Alley game and I wrote up a scenario called Over due book Hunt. The basic concept of the game was to find the Book of the Dead and up to four players could play. I provided everything for the game and had a nice little table set up for the game. In fact I had a bunch of folks come by and watch the game and take pictures of the table. Just FYI I shipped the terrain all out to Chicago from Phoenix.

I had four people scheduled for the game and only three showed up, but as I said a lot of folks stopped by to watch and ask questions about the rules. The nice thing about Pulp Alley is that once the players played a couple of turns they had it down and I could talk to folks about the game. It was a success and will take the game back to Adepticon next year.

Saturday came to a close and I was invited out to the bar with John, Aaron, Eric and a few others. needless to say it was another late night of spending time with friends.

Sunday came early and Merle and I headed out to Breakfast with Mark and Orge. It was awesome doing breakfast with these fine gentlemen and once again it is another reason I enjoy going to Adepticon, the friends. Once back from breakfast I got pulled into a Free blades demo game with John at DGS games. Played a great game and then bought a few figures for DGS to run some demos of Freeblades here in Phoenix. I then met up with Rich, Merle and Mark to play a game of Hail Caesar with Rich's Crusader army and Saracens. 

Once this game finished up I head back out to the vendor hall and then started to start breaking stuff down since the con ended at 4:00. Once we got a few rooms broken down I headed up to my room for a quick nap. Sleep would not come so I watched the snow fall outside my window. I then headed down to the bar/restaurant to hang out with the DGS crew (John, Matt, Merle, Ogre, Madlin, Chris and a few others. It was another long night and I headed up to my room to pack and get ready to head back home the next day.

When I awoke Monday morning, it was still snowing and there was at least 5" of fresh loose snow on the ground. Merle drove me to the airport and a short drive of 23 minutes took over an hour. It seems the folks in Chicago don't know how to drive in the snow! My flight was scheduled to leave at 10:55am but we didn't leave until noon thanks to the weather delays. I finally touched down in Phoenix at 2:00pm and was thankful to be home in warm weather again.

So my trip was a huge success and I got to spend time with a lot of friends, I highly recommend that if your thinking about making the trip that you go. I had thought after I got home that this would be the last time to make the trip, but after thinking about it, I will go back. It wasn't the games, it is the friends that I have made over the years that keeps me going back. And next year will see me participating in a large, cool, awesome game and because of this one game I will have to go back.

Well it almost time!

By this time next week I will be in The Windy City for Adepticon, one of the best gaming events in the country. I will once again be attending this awesome event and I am running a few games with friends and taking I all that there is of Adepticon.

For the last few weeks I have been painting like a mad man to get ready for the Legends of the Old West game as well as the Pulp Alley game. I will also be floating around taking pictures of the event for all those that can't make it.

Where did the time go????

Wow,

It has been a full two frickin months since I posted, what the hell?? Well, just because I have not posted doesn't mean I have been lazy on the game front, I have been very busy. So what have I been up to, well for one thing, January 2nd I sent in my manuscript to Winged Hussar Publishing to publish HEROIC, a generic historical skirmish game. Right now I am waiting to hear back from the publisher for re-writes and additions to the manuscript. So yes folks, there is going to be another set of rules published by Tim Kulinski, fans of my previous work will appreciate the rules and I plan to be supported and release updates for said game. Once I have the working copy I will post more on this. I also have another set of rules that I am working on with a partner for the same publisher that will be an Air Combat game with a working title of either ACES or Legends of the Sky. So you may see some updates here about that as well as some play testing here, so stay tuned.Now I am also working with the fine folks at Pulp Alley for a possible supplement for a very "Scary" book. I will not go into much more detail than that, so stay tuned. So I have been busy writing a few things.

Now I am also getting ready to make the trip to Adepticon in a few short weeks, and I have been painting up models for the Legends of the Old West game I am assisting with my good friend Merle, aka Mother". Here are a few pics of stuff I have done for this game, these are for "Mother" and all of them are Foundry figures.

In addition to the above figures, I have also been working on figures to supply for folks to use, all of these are Gorgon Studios figures that I got last year from my buddy Hank who runs Gorgon. There are a few figures that have yet to be released yet.

Besides the Old West game, I am running a Pulp Alley game and have had to paint up a couple of Leagues for the game I am running. Here they are:

French Foreign Legion, a mix of Artizan and Old Glory. 

The only figure I painted up is the German Officer which is a Pulp Figure.

And lastly I have gotten back into another hobby, Model Railroading after a 17 year absent. I was going to jump into N scale but after pricing items, I just went back into HO. I am finally building my layout inside of the house like I originally planned 15+ years ago. It will be in the game room along with my 4'x6' game table and paint desk. It is a  L shaped shelf layout that is 8'x15" wide by 7'x6" long. It will be based on the Southern Pacific Railroad in the mid 1990's and based off the Anaheim Branch line that I used to haunt all those years ago.

After negotiating the space I contacted my good friend Bill Meyer in CA to construct the modules and after a trip out to CA to pick up said modules (and operate on Bills Layout) I had the beginnings of my layout. It will be a long term project that I will document here on the blog. So here is the beginnings of the layout.

2014 Review or What I did or Did not do!

Okay,

First off I have been absent from the blog for the past two months dealing with the loss of my father in-law. He passed away about a month and a half ago and it has been rough on my wife. My in-laws live in California so we have been making many trips out there for the past two months. So hence the reason for the lack of blog posts and the lack of any gaming. Life sometimes has a way to mess up the best laid plans. On that note lets take a look back at what I have done this year.

X-Wing
Well I have only played a few games of X-wing this year and one of the games was a multi-player game with Robert, Jerry and Mike.The game was great and we all had a blast, although Robert was the only one doing any sort of damage with Han Solo and the Falcon! But sadly after that game, it never got back onto the table. It seems that we all love the game but just never have time to bust it out and we play other games. Now as I write this Robert and I are getting together tonight for New Years and we are suppose to play some X-wing. Funny we ended last year with games of X-wing as well.

 Flames of War
So Flames of War was pretty big again with me getting in twenty five games this year. I also painted up three armies this year (US Airborne, German Stug G and Jagpanter lists) and played in my first Shifting Sands event. It was a good year for FoW but I did notice that by game twenty I was starting to feel like i needed to shift gears. I had to take a break from the game because I was getting to wrapped up in it. I started to get upset with myself and becoming angry as I played and thats when I knew I need to take a break. I still love the game, just need a break is all.

Pulp Alley
Pulp gaming has always been one of my favorite eras to play and I have been painting a few figs a year now. With the release of Pulp Alley I found more time to acquire and paint up Pulp models. I got in a bunch of games of Pulp Alley this year and I will continue to play this game. Mike has also been bitten by the Pulp  Alley bug and we are talking about doing a short four game "Movie"/campaign so expect to see more Pulp Alley this year.

Legends of the Old West
So this year I played in a LotOW tourney at Adepticon, I was won the Best Sportsmen Award and I missed out on the Best Looking Award by one point, which was my point that I voted for another guy. One thing that Adepticon did was fuel my need for 4Ground old west buildings, the tournament had them and I fell in love with them. I sold my Arnica resin buildings to fund buying the 4Ground stuff. Well I have about 6 buildings and they look great. On the figure front I got a set of the Magnificent Seven set from Gorgon Miniatures. I also this year was able to pick up a few Black Scorpion miniatures to add to the collection. But other than one game that Robert & I played after Adepticon, no other old west games happened. But all in all I was pretty pleased with LotOW this year.

Bolt Action
Gathering in the Desert saw the first and only Bolt Action event run here in the valley of the sun. We had about 18 players and it was a huge success. I did a lot of terrain work for the event and did add a few units to my armies. The weekend right after GitD, saw another Bolt Action event run by the local Warlord reps and I was excited to get a chance to play as a player. But the local rep knew anything really about the game or how to run a event. In fact I only got to play two games out of three because a odd number of players. Needless to say, do to the poor running of the event I lost all interest in playing Bolt Action. In fact I didn't even want to talk about Bolt Action, I was that bummed about the game. I will say that my interest is coming backand in July while on vacation I picked up two boxes of Perry Miniature DAK figures. Robert and I will be doing some North Africa in the up coming year.

Just like the dead asleep in their graves, so was this game. I had high hopes to get this onto the table but it never happened. Once again, there is only so much time to game and choices need to be made, so EotD sleeps awaiting the day to climb out of its grave (or tabletop!).

Saga

Well the plan was to get Saga onto the table and as of the last few weeks, it has been played. I have about four games under my belt as of today (played two games against Robert earlier today). I have dusted off my old WAB army vikings and pressed them into Saga service. The last time my vikings were out of the box was about 5 years ago, so it is nice to be able to use them again. Within the last few weeks I have purchased Saga dice (Vikings and Anglo Saxon) as well as a Gripping Beast Anglo Saxon Warlord and plastic box of Saxon Thegns. Today I picked up a box of Bondi troops from Wargames Factory to add to my collection of Saga Vikings and Saxons. The good thing is that we are having a few people jump into Saga, so we will be getting Saga out onto the tabletop in the coming year.

Black Powder
Well our group of gamers did two Black Powder American Civil War games last year and we all wanted to get more of it onto the table in 2014, but we were only able to get in one game this year. I also wanted to get my Confederate Brigade painted up and I have to say that it was an epic fail. Robert and I were talking about that today at lunch and we are not sure why it hasn't been played more this year. So the plan is to get my army painted for 2015 as well as a few other items for Black Powder.

Adepticon

Well Adepticon was a huge success for me as well as the event itself. After a two year hiatus I made it back to the Windy City and had a blast. I played in the LotOW tournament, helped run the Legends of the High Seas game as well as ran the first ever Bolt Action event. I also played in a Gladiator game run by my buddy Merle as well as a Chariot racing game. I also got to hangout with friends and just soaked up everything that was Adepticon. One thing that I realized this year is that I am enjoying helping out more than playing in events. More on that later.

Gathering in the Desert
After five successful Lord of the Rings events and one successful Bolt Action I have decided to hang up my organizer hat. This decision was not made easily and I have had many discussions with the rest of the GitD crew. A few major things brought us to this decision, first up is my commitment to Adepticon 2015, which I will be helping out with next year. I will be assisting and running a few games while out there. The prep work is quite extensive and this will keep me busy right up until I fly back to Chicago. Secondly I am writing a new book and this is also eating up spare time, so no chance to organize. So what does this mean, well it means that GitD will be slowing down on events. We still plan to do some smaller events, so stay tuned.

So whats on the horizon here at Cursed Treasures? well here are a few things:

Saga - As I stated above, Saga will be getting a lot of play in the new year with figures purchased and headed to the paint table.

AWI - American War of Independence will be coming to the table this year in 15mm. Mike & I are going to be doing some Black Powder games in 15mm and we have already purchased the figures from Blue Moon via Old Glory Miniatures. I will be doing colonists while he takes the evil British. AWI will also be on the table in 28mm with Muskets and Tomahawks. I was talked into running a few demos of it at Adepticon. I will also be getting a few of the new Indians from Wargames Factory to do some French and Indian wars in 28mm.

Pulp Alley - Well once again I am running a game of Pulp Alley at Adepticon so there will be more games played here in the valley. I am also working with David Phipps (the author) to write some scenarios for him on his future project for the game, so you will be seeing more of that here. All I can say is it involves a certain person named Vlad the Impaler.

HEROIC - This is the new rule set that I have been working on since Adepticon and on the 2nd of this month I send off the manuscript to start editing and proof reading. So I know there will be some re-writes as well as playing some games, so that will keep me busy.

Flames of War - For Christmas I got a British WW1 army from Robert, so I will be getting those painted up so we can switch gears and start doing some WW1 games. I also would like to start collecting some Fate of the Nation models for the modern conflicts. Not really planning any new armies for WW2 right now, but I will be adding stuff to current armies.

CAV - Well a bunch of guys got into the kick starter and Mike gave me 8 models to paint up. The plan is to start playing this in 2015 and I have already painted up the eight models and now just waiting for the other guys to get there's up so we can play. 

So there you go my plans for 2015. I am sure that I will be doing more in the New Year, so stay tuned I am sure it will be an interesting year for gaming.
