A Very Pulpy Birthday!

So,

On October 26th, my 45th birthday rolled around this year, hard to believe that I am 45 and still playing with toy soldiers! (Well not really) So a week before my birthday, my awesome wife asked me what I wanted as a gift. Well that was a no brainier, more toy soldiers of course, but which ones, hmm this was going to be tough.

I have a few projects (28mm ACW, 28mm WW2, 15mm, WW2, EotD, and of course Pulp). So after looking through my projects, I noticed that I only have a few Pulp figures left to paint. So the decision was simple, it had to be more Pulp figures. So with that, I was off the amazing Pulp Figures website! I have been a fan of Bob Murch's figures for a few years now and I have a large selection of his stuff already. So I took an inventory of what I had vs what I wanted and 6 packs were ordered!

First up was pack PHP 14 Rugged Archaeologists, these figures will be adventuring in the desert very soon. I really like the figure on the far left as well as the women with the lantern.

PHP 14  Rugged Archaeologists
Next up is pack PHP 19 Dangerous Dames, these ladies will fit in very well with the rest of the figures. I really love the She Wolf figure 2nd to the left as well as the girl in the middle, heck I love them all!

PHP 19 Dangerous Dames
Next up is pack PHP 18 Rugged Sons of the Empire, these boys have a ton of character. I like the Stiff Upper Lip old chap on the far left as well as the Scottsmen with the shotgun.

PHP 18 Rugged Sons of the Empire
Next is pack PWM 12 Mad Science, this set will be perfect for the crazy scientists for just about any game. The women 2nd to the right is holding a man eating plant, how cool is that?

PWM 12 Mad Science
Next up is pack PHP 20 Rugged Hero's, this is a re-sculpted pack that Bob recently did. I really like the new Indiana Jones look a like figure. The whip is separate ad allows you to shape it the way you want. I dont get the dog though, but I am sure I will find a use for him.

PHP 20 New Rugged Hero's
The last pack is PWM 31 Arrogant Gestop, and the one reason for this pack is the fellow in the middle, now you will notice something strange with him. Yes, I snipped his head off and replaced it with something a little more fitting. Yes that's right, I changed him into the Red Skull!

PWM 31 Arrogant Gestapo
I have been wanting to do some Pulp Super Hero gaming and when I found out that my buddy Robert had a "Not Captain America & Not Bucky" figures, I had to do a Red Skull. So obviously I started with a Pulp Figure, just snipped his head off and replaced it with a GW skeleton head. Once I snipped the head off, I drill a hole into the body to pin the new head on. I then added a small amount of green stuff to fill the neck out, took about 5 minutes worth of work and viola, Red Skull was born.

About the same time my wife asked what I wanted, my buddy Robert gifted me a present that I was not expecting. A few years back another one of our friends (Tom O) purchased a bunch of Gangland buildings from Old Glory. Well Tom never got around to doing anything and some how Robert got them. Well when I was over at his place, he told me to throw both of the boxes with all the buildings into my truck. His reasoning, it was going to be my B-day and he knew I was eyeing these guys.So here are the buildings.

They need some work like drilling out the windows and filling a few holes, but it will look great once completed. Now the last building is a beast, it is a factory type of building and this thing is massive! You can see just how big it is in the final pics with the figures standing next to them.

So there you go, my 45th Bday haul, all pulp, so stay tuned for more...

Perilous Island Review

Wow,

It has been a while since I posted, I need to get better at that, but it is funny how life gets in the way of hobby stuff. Any how, tonight I am doing a little review of a supplement for Pulp Alley. Now, before I get started on the review, I have to inform you folks that I was given this supplement free and that I also helped with a couple of the scenarios for play testing, so I may have a slight bias. I just wanted to get that out there so folks know where I am coming from, now onto the review!

So, what is Perilous Island anyway you ask, well glad you asked. Perilous Island is the first in many supplements for Pulp Alley and is written by David Phipps and Robert Fisher. Perilous comes in at 45 pages and has the same great layout as Pulp Alley. The first 14 pages cover some new rules (Weird & Amazing) as well as some new abilities and perks. The neat thing with the new rules is that you can do some pretty cool characters and Terrors (which can be super bad guys). The Terrors rule allows you to build a wide variety of bad guys with cool abilities which are able to take on whole leagues. Picture the Mummy, Kong, Dinosaurs or any other super cool creations. Another new rule is the Bursts, which uses a cone shaped template that can represent anything from machine guns, explosions, a swarm of bugs or some sort of magical blast. The nice thing is that the rules allow you to use them how you want.

The rest of the book is dedicated to the Campaign, which is set up as three acts which has 11 scenarios that are all linked together. The basic story line is that you are hunting for a lost perilous island. The scenarios can be played either as stand alone games or all linked together. I got a chance to play the Soeraba Manhunt and Lagoon of Terror during play testing. All the scenarios have special rules that lend themselves towards the campaign.

The last section has some sample Leagues (which are your teams or crews) and it is nice to see how you can use the new rules for other games.the last page has the templates for the bursts which are either a 3" round burst, a short teardrop burst or a long tear burst template, once again allowing you to use them for which ever best fits your game.

So all in all, this is a great supplement for Pulp Alley and I highly recommend this even if you are not interested in the campaign, the new rules are well worth it. So I would give it 5 stars out of 5, this is a great supplement.

Now I just need to get a few more figures painted up and drag a few of my game buddies over for some Perilous Island adventures. On a side note, I am looking at taking Pulp Alley to Adepticon 2014 for a few demos, so if you have not tried it and your heading to Adepticon, look me up for a demo game.

General Butternutts Epic Stand

So,

Today a bunch of us today got another epic Black Powder ACW game, This time around Tom was the organizer of said event. The players were as follows, Myself, Robert, Tim P and Al R being the Union side, while Tom O, Joe D and his Son Joey took up the confederates side.

The table was a small 12' x 8' and the terrain was supplied by myself, Rob and Tom. here are a few before shots.

Tom came up with an interesting way of deciding the forces, we drew randomly and each brigade had a random set of units with random skills. Once sides were decided, we rolled for our leadership of our Brigade commanders. Rob, Tim P and Al all rolled a leadership of 9, while I was to be the unlucky one with a leadership of 6!

Well, once we got under way, the North proceeded to march on in all the pageantry  that they were know for. Tim P advanced up the road, Rob and Al both advanced as well, I got lucky ad was able to moe on as well.

The Rebels advanced onto the table and took up good postions, but it was clear that the rapid union advance had caught them by surprises.

By turn 3 things started to get interesting, the Union had advanced across the table and started to pour fire on the Rebs. Also it came down to my brigade had to advance to support Tim P on our flank, the Union General attached to my Brigade (so I could use his Leadership) and I was successful with ordering my large unit into a firing line to start my shooting against the Rebs that were still in march column.

By the beginning of the 4th turn, things went bad for the Rebs, the Union had a good round of shooting and I even was able to get my large unit into Hand to Hand combat. they were successful and routed the Rebs on my side of the table. After the smoked cleared, it was obvious that the Union had won the day. Here are a few more shots from the game.

All in all it was a great day and it was awesome to see the game on the table. This has fired me up to get my Rebs to the table. I look forward to the next game.
